Alex + Kunal // At Home in Charlottesville

If there’s one thing that I don’t get to do near enough of, it’s sessions at home. Don’t get me wrong, I feel very lucky to get to spend so much time in Shenandoah National Park and the surrounding mountains! But I think there’s something different and really special about getting to spend time with a couple in their own home and document a fragment of everyday life. Plus, sometimes it means I get to hang out with really cute Dalmatians named Betsy.

I photographed Alex + Kunal’s wedding about a year before this and it was one of my favorites of the season - they are just so much fun to spend time with, and one of those couples that makes you happier just by being around them. So when they asked me to do an in-home session a couple blocks from my own home, I couldn’t have been more stoked. Alex spent years stripping this Belmont home back to its bones and remodeling it with the help of friends and family into something deeply beautiful, but life was taking them elsewhere so this sessions was a bit of a bittersweet farewell to a special place. It was so lovely to get a little tour and photograph the two of them in all its little nooks and crannies and beams of light.
